Tail of Hope
Scissortail Flycatcher where do you soar?
I was looking down at the ground when I noticed your small shadow of hope.
You turned my head up and fluttered so peacefully with the breeze,
Unlike other birds that fly with heavy determination,
You float, as weightless as a butterfly,
It made me gaze, it made me wonder, it made me cry.
I felt that you soared with all the answers that I needed,
I stopped there, in the knee-high grass, and silently pleaded.
I stared as you landed on a wire, high above,
I wanted to know your secret, I wanted to know how such a small thing could exude so much love.
The landscape and the sky hugged your face like you were a part of it all,
I wondered if I could do that, could I be a part of it all?
Why did such a small bird, move me in such a big way?
I snapped myself out of it, I couldn’t stay all day.
Little did I know, your split tail would be everywhere I turned
I saw you in the spring, in the summer, and in the winter.
You were relentless in reminding me each day is new,
Each time I saw you, my heart swelled, and my mindset grew.
When I told my husband how you kept appearing whenever I was outside,
In the glow of dusk, he looked at me wide-eyed,
For he too was struck with a feeling of profound,
For he too had seen you all around.
We both looked at each other, tears filling our eyes,
Our hearts pounding with the feeling of another try.
Was this actually the new beginning we dreamt of?
Was this the place we dug our feet in and started to rise above?
Scissortail Flycatcher where do you soar?
Scissortail Flycatcher your turned this stream into a river that roars.
Just when two people were just about out of rope,
You were our reminder, there is always hope.
