Lessons Learned

Jump in the seat
Your feet hover over the floor
You can't even reach to shut the door
He closes it for you
Is there anything he doesn't do?

He fixes sprinklers
Goest extra fast on roller blades
Yep, with him you've got it made

But, never mind all that now
It's just you and him driving around
Your eyes sparkle with wonder and amazement
But you're not even looking out the window,
You're looking at the drivers face and the way the sun sets his face aglow

That face just makes you smile
You're so lucky it's just you and him for a while

You and him, just driving through town
So content, not making a sound
But, you have giddy anticipation
For car ride conversations are quite the occasion

Just you and him talking,
As the world passes by outside
You're so pure
You innately appreciate every moment of this ride

You learn so much from point A to point B
Life lessons and playing piano on the dash
Rock-n-roll trivia and how to manage your cash,
What he thinks about God and the way you should be treated
Oh, the things you learned, while seated

In that truck, riding shot gun
Car rides with Dad were always fun
You thought those days would last forever

But, slowly you grew up
And you found yourself riding less and less in that truck

You grew and had a family of your own
And now, as your husband and daughter leave home
You watch that sparkle in her eye
And your heart is filled with sweet memories

You silently thank the man that drove that truck
For he left you with words that stuck

All those lessons in the car,
Led you to where you are

And set the standard for the love you accepted
And you let love take over, your life is infected

With good, good love
That stemmed from those truck rides,
When your two souls fit like a glove.
